New movie based on story 

Of giant Nile croc "Gustave"

 

A new film to be released nationwide on January 12 by Hollywood Pictures, titled Primeval, is loosely based on accounts of the storied giant Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), named "Gustave." The African crocodile is alleged to be the killer of many humans and has been sought for capture for years.

India forest officials seek power 

To shoot mafia in gharial sanctuary

 

The Forest Department of India has sought powers to shoot illegal miners and weapons to deal with the powerful mafia who are mining stone and sand in the Gwalior-Chambal division, which includes sensitive gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) habitat critically threatened by the abuse of the miners and mafia.

Malaysian mint puts endangered crocs 

On commemorative gold coins

 

The Royal Mint of Malaysia is commemorating several endangered species of its country in a limited release series of newly minted gold coins. The species recognized in images on the individual coins designs include the Malyan Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii), the Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis), and the Indopacific crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). 

The purpose of the coin release: "To instill public awareness, particularly among the young generation, on the importance of protecting these animals, their habitat and environment."

Some Florida natives dwell 

A sympathetic description of the Phoenix Herpetological Society's Reptile Sanctuary where Daniel Marchand cares for 51 alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) and other herps taken from illegal breeding operations, drug dealers and other "crazies" (the reporter's words, not your editor's) who thought they'd be cool pets.

Croc attack wound 'a love bite', 

Says park curator

 

A far north Queensland zoo worker has been bitten by a 3m/9ft crocodile and suffered puncture wounds to his hands and fingers.

The park's curator, Terry Carmichael, says "I've seen worse bites on [the] Crocodile Hunter on telly and I've certainly seen worse dog bites."

Alligator survives after run over by car

 

A link to a video news item describing the Florida police reaction to an alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) that was run over on a busy highway. Deputies said the 0.9m/3ft alligator was hit just after midnight Tuesday.

Crocodile in farmer's well 

 

Indian fire service personnel are perplexed as to how a 1.8m/5ft -long, 17kg/37.5lb crocodile got into a 15.2m/50ft -deep well. The croc was recovered after three days of pumping out most of the 6.1m/20ft -depth of water and will be sent to a specialist institution.
