Week of 16 December 07
11 December 07 The holiday gift that keeps on giving: Give a croc to a needy croc population
The holiday insanity, parking-lot face-offs and shopping-cart races will occur with or without you — but plenty of other causes really do need your support. Instead of maxing out your MasterCard yet again, stop and think. You can actually save money and your sanity, and gift twice: once by donating to a charitable cause and again by dedicating that charitable gift to a friend or loved one.
Give the gift of… a giant water reptile? With so many water habitats around the globe at risk, crocodiles are now an endangered species. Oxfam America ( oxfamamericaunwrapped.com) lets you donate a lil’ baby croc to areas where the population has been depleted.http://commongroundmag.com/2007/12/mlls0712.html

14 December 07 Indian alligators found dead In Chambal River
A concurrent item to "Liver disease killing gharials: Experts," posted below, this one offers a few more details on activities in the area.
"A motor boat is roaming from last one week and getting the dead Gharials out of the river. They catch them, tie their legs and head and then bury them in the mud. A few dead bodies are thrown in deep water as well," said a villager.
Last month, Agra forest department
officials facilitated the release of 40 alligators into
River Chambal, their natural habitat.

Aussie croc
farmer hopes for good rain
An Australian crocodile farm near Emu Park is hoping for good rain falls over the coming months to secure a successful mating season.
Farm owner John Lever says the
crocodiles began breeding two weeks ago, with about 100 eggs
collected in just one day this week and more rain in January
would help the younger females that mate towards the end of
the season.

{Excerpts} (Ed Comment:
lets see now … I think it’s time to cool off with a
drink and a dip) A South African bar built into a 72 foot high Baobab tree has an interesting ‘croc-culture’ connection.
Locals believe that if a person
drinks water in which the tree's seeds have been soaked, he
will be safe from a crocodile attack.
18 December 07 Bully crocs rule farms
Crocodile farms are breeding bullies by the hatchery-load.
Crocodile bullies pick on "runts" at farms to such an extent that half the deaths in commercial operations can be linked to the stress they cause, leading croc researcher Dr Sally Isberg has found.
Dr Isberg, the chief scientist at Darwin Crocodile Farm - Australia`s biggest crocodile farm, with about 36,000 animals - has won a $10,000 science and innovation award from the Bureau of Rural Sciences for research into the social interactions of farm-raised crocodiles. http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2007/12/18/2884_ntnews.html
17 December 07 Do we have our very own 'Rogue' croc?
Monster croc
tracks of a possible 5 m/16 ft croc were snapped by
fisherman Jamie Coltman, who stumbled across the huge saltie
(the Saltwater Crocodile, Crocodylus porosus) while
fishing at Keep River, 468km west of Katherine, Australia.

Filmed at Katherine and Kakadu, Rogue is about a huge croc who terrorises a tour boat. http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2007/12/17/2873_ntnews.html
15 December 07 Warmups signal gators' return
The perils of duck hunting with dogs ... in gator-rich Texas!
"Turns out, the little freshwater slough was home to at least two gators. ... One of them, which appeared to measure maybe 7 feet/2.1 metres or so, slowly stalked the plastic duck decoys. The gator eventually nosed and nudged a drake wigeon decoy, finally leaving it alone after (I guess) deciding it was not edible."
There is not a single documented case of a Texas alligator fatally attacking a human. Dogs are a different story. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/outdoors/tompkins/5382169.html
14 December 07 Work is really a croc for Brochu
Cluttered with a wide variety of
crocodile and alligator bones, his office is a miniature
museum of sorts - almost to the point where it's sometimes
hard to find things, he says. But without the skeletons, it
seems that Chris Brochu's office would be an inaccurate
representation of the man himself.
14 December 07 Liver disease killing gharials: Experts
LUCKNOW: The wildlife experts from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have confirmed that the deaths of 29 Indian Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) in the Chambal river were caused by a fatal liver disease.
"Post-mortem examinations carried out on the dead crocodiles have confirmed cirrhosis of liver as the cause of death," D.N.S. Suman, chief wildlife conservator, told from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh.
Experts were baffled at the spate of crocodile deaths in Chambal river that is regarded as a natural habitat of the animal. As many as 29 crocodiles have died over the past three days in Chambal river on account of cirrhosis, a fatal liver disease. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1139259
13 December 07 Crocodiles menace flood victims
Kuala Lumpur - Crocodiles are becoming a menace in flood-hit southern Malaysia, reports said on Thursday, as the death toll from the floods rose to 12 and authorities struggled to cope with 19 000 evacuees.
The New Straits Times reported that some villages in Johor state, which lies next to Singapore, are living in fear of crocodiles who had been seen feasting on dead chickens dumped by poultry farms. http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_2237888,00.html
