Crocodiles a Snap for Entrepreneur

South African crocodile farmer Lambrecht is co-winner in the export section of the agriculture department's Female Farmer of the Year award. Her business, Krokkodene Krokodilplaas, near Hartbeesfontein, west of Klerksdorp, has grown from six crocodiles at startup to 1700 animals today. The Krokkodene story is written as a classic example of entrepreneurship.

Krokkodene's animals are shot and bled out on the farm, meeting strict European Union regulations for blemish-free hides. The carcasses are then shipped by refrigerated vehicles to an abattoir in Bela Bela in Limpopo, where they are prepared for export, chiefly to the Far East.

Crocodile farming is capital intensive and it requires a long-term commitment. It takes between 2 and 3 1/2 years for an animal to reach a length of about 1.5m/4.9ft, at which stage the hide - the meat is a byproduct - is large enough to meet the demands of the market and deliver an adequate return on the input.

Alligator hunting season

May again be expanded

Florida officials will discuss expanding alligator hunting and trapping, or any other ways to manage the estimated 1 million to 2 million gators in Florida. Florida nearly doubled the length of alligator hunting season this year, which ran Aug. 15 to Nov. 1. People kill about 10,000 alligators a year in Florida. Hunters claimed 3,436 of them last year, compared with 3,237 in 2004. More than 7,000 "nuisance" alligators were killed last year as a result of 18,000 complaints from the general public. In May, three attacks brought to 20 the number of people killed in Florida by alligators since 1948. But alligator experts say the odds of dying in such an attack are low. By comparison, about 430 people died from lightning strikes during the same 48-year period.

Croc has last laugh ... again

Two successive items about Townsville, Australia's problems with a crocodile that is lurking by a nearby beach.

Manager of conservation services Mark Read warned residents: "To see crocodiles off the coast of Townsville or Cairns or off anywhere in North Queensland doesn't surprise me because we live in a crocodile habitat and swimming up the coast is part of their normal behaviour, ... It needs to be reinforced that we are actually living in a crocodile habitat and we need to be croc-wise in croc country".

Where do reptiles such as alligators

Go when winter comes?

During times of dormancy, alligators live off of their own fat, not needing to consume new food. But as soon as the sun comes out and the weather warms up, gators emerge from their dens to glide through the water and bask in the sun.

Agency mulls changes

To alligator regulations

(Terry Witt) Florida's wildlife protection agency wants to take a fresh look at alligators and has enlisted the help of the public in figuring out how to better manage the toothy swamp critters. Any change in gator management regulation would require numerous public hearings and an extensive scientific study by Fish & Wildlife Commission.
