21 November 07 Assam to breed gharials To boost their numbers
With only 189 gharials left in the wild in India and Nepal, a first-time captive breeding programme is to be launched for the crocodile-like reptile in the Manas national park of Assam.
The decision came following the rescue of a gharial from fishermen's nets in the Manas river last week.
“We first thought of releasing it back into the wild, but after consultations, we have come up with the idea of captive breeding,” said an official, “We will search for her partner once the groundwork is ready for the breeding programme after consultations with experts”.
'In the last
30-35 years, there have been only six to eight officially recorded
sightings. All of them were in Assam's southern districts, including the
region where the animal was recently rescued,' said P.C. Bhattacharjee,
a senior zoologist in Guwahati University.

An eye-witness said the victim was swimming near a rock. But minutes later he was seen struggling to free himself from the jaws of a crocodile before disappearing into the water.

16 November 07 Alligator processing at Vermilion
They're scaly, slimy and their teeth are very sharp. But the Sagrera family turns these green skins into green cash at their gator farm south of Abbeville. "My dad was one of the first to start - and we built a family business from there," says Kevin Sagrera.
Since 1992, the Vermilion Gator Farm has raised alligators and sold their skin which has been crafted into boots, wallets and watch straps. The gators are harvested when they're a year old. A special machine kills the gators, then they're kept on ice overnight. http://www.katc.com/Global/story.asp?S=7373982
