Crocodile Undee catches
saltie with jocks
In Australia, Jimmy Howard went "commando" in an attempt to rescue a 1.5m/5 foot Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) stranded on a popular Darwin beach – by lassoing the critter and then taking off his red jocks (briefs/smalls) and putting them over its eyes to calm it down.
"I just ripped my jocks off, soaked them in the water and wrapped them around its face," the ballsy Territorian said. "It was a bit cranky ..."
When asked if he was planning on
wearing his handy jocks again, Mr Howard said: "I don't
know. I'll have to give them a good wash".

In Hong Kong, two
men and a woman have been arrested for selling fake
crocodile meat. 24 samples of crocodile meat sold at Chinese dried seafood shops were sampled and 16 of those were found to be monitor lizard or snake meat. Only eight were genuine crocodile meat.
Proprietors selling fake crocodile meat are liable to five years' jail and a $500,000 fine. http://www.news.gov.hk/en/category/lawandorder/ 071114/html/071114en08002.htm 13 November 07 Fleeing robbery suspect killed by alligator
A Florida man police said was breaking into cars was attacked and killed by a 9-ft /2.7m alligator while trying to run from police. A robbery suspect tried to elude officer by jumping into a large pond behind the facility – during his swim, a alligator attacked and killed the man. He was apparently bitten on the head several times.
The alligator believed responsible
for attacking and then killing the man was captured and
transported to All American Gator in Pembroke Park.
"Anytime an alligator digests or even kills a person, it is a state law through the Florida Fish and Game that the gator be destroyed." http://www.local6.com/news/14580616/detail.html

13 November 07 64 loose crocodiles seized in Vietnam
In
Vietnam, there’s a long running story about efforts by local
officials to recover/’neutralise’ about 5,000 crocodiles
that have escaped their farms during recent regional
flooding. Previous efforts to collect
storm-loosed crocs took up to five months before the
government was satisfied that there was no threat to the
local villagers. To date, there are no reports of anybody being attacked by a wayward crocodile. Of note, about 500 of the animals are ‘adult’ with some of those weighing in at about 200 kilos/ 440 pounds.
Vietnam is home to
around 1,000 crocodile farms that house at least 100,000
crocs.

Celebrity L.A. gator featured in new book
Palos Verdes-Reggie’s back! Los Angeles’ celebrity alligator is featured in a new book, REGGIE: My Story, which follows the saga of the pet alligator left at Harbor Regional Park two summers ago. After avoiding capture and remaining in hiding for over 18 months, Reggie was finally snared in late May and taken to his new Los Angeles Zoo home. Six days after he was moved into a newly remodeled and landscaped enclosure, the wily L.A. gator scaled a wire fence but was discovered quickly. http://www.expertclick.com/NewsReleaseWire/default.cfm?Action=ReleaseDetail&ID=18716
10 November 07 Crocs add to worries in Malaysia
In Malaysia, crocodiles are being seen in traditionally croc-free waters after annual flooding.
One man reported that a metre-long/3-foot Estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) ‘swam in between his legs” when he was repairing a raft-house. A few months earlier, the same man’s father had been attacked by a 90 kilo/200 pound crocodile in the same area.
"With the crocodiles around, we are
dicing with danger every time we take a deep swim to repair
the houses." http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Saturday/ National/2080617/Article/index_html
09 November 07 Croc makes its way to Vietnamese dinner tables
Until recently, few Vietnamese would have thought that the crocodile would have made its way to the dinner table or become one of their favorite dishes.
But now the armored reptile is being served in more and more specialty restaurants in major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. http://www.thanhniennews.com/entertaiments/?catid=6&newsid=33266
08 November 07 Desert crocodiles in the Sahara
It’s hard to believe that 8-ton, dinosaur-eating ‘Super Crocs’ roamed the Sahara 110 million years ago. More incredibly, perhaps, latter day versions are still living there. Historically, the Nile crocodile used to be found all around the Sahara and even on the Mediterrenean coast. In the desert, permanent water in big rivers and pools in the Ennedi, Tibesti, Hoggar and Tassili were until a century ago their home. Food mostly consists of the numerous barbel and catfish that inhabit the same waters. http://www.wildlifeextra.com/desert-crocodiles893.html

08 November 07 Two alligators seized from NY pet shop
Ask their owner, and he'll tell you that alligators Jimmy and Stewart had a pretty comfortable life in their 55-gallon tank at Best Pets in Oakdale, NY: an island to bathe on, a waterfall, and warming lamps.
"They were safe," Joseph Salamone said. "No one could touch them."
But yesterday,
Suffolk's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
said the alligators are dangerous, despite their relatively
good living conditions and their size - Jimmy is 1 foot long
and Stewart 2 feet long. Salamone was ticketed for
possession of illegal animals, and the alligators were
seized.
