Once endangered, gators now pests

The discussion of the future of alligators in Florida as a protected species continues. Last year, the million alligators in the state were involved in 18,000 complaints, seven unprovoked bites and 7,700 removed gators. "People recognize now that we have a lot of alligators and they are in no way threatened," said Lindsey Hord, biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Alligator Management Program. "We don't need to be as tolerant of alligators in urban areas because we do have lots of alligators in wild areas - I mean lots of them."

Allan the croc's on the run

Allan the Belgian biting croc has so far managed to evade wildlife rangers who plan to take him to a breeding farm.  Area locals remain unhappy with the croc hunt, with a tourism spokesman declaring that "I don't think being tormented by an idiotic tourist warrants his (Allan's) removal… If you were being taunted by that tourist you would bite him too.” The Allan-hunt continues.

Croc 'befriended' before attack

Its been recently determined that Allan’s recent reaction to a Belgian tourist might be in part due the gator loosing its natural wariness of humans.  It seems that a local had been approaching the croc over a two-month period, thereby modifying the croc’s natural, defensive reactions.

Croc safety class

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers will conduct crocodile safety classes with Townsville surf lifesavers. This year was the first time crocodiles have stalked Townsville beaches and lifesavers had to deal with sightings of the reptiles.  Of interest, a conservation services official declared that “We've done research where we captured three problem crocodiles and we put a (tracking device) on them and they always moved back to where we caught them - … One traveled 450km to go home.

Man receives 30 stitches in croc attack

A 35-year-old Iban man received over 30 stitches after he was bitten by a crocodile.  Preoccupied with his fishing, Mr. Jarau let his legs dangle over the jetty and then the reportedly 6-foot croc subsequently sprung up and bit him on the right leg.

Outcry at Stefaan's croc shock

Yesterday’s provoked gator attack on a Belgian tourist in Australia has resulted in public anger since the result will mean the removal of ‘Allan’, a popular local croc-icon.  Allen won’t be destroyed however … apparently he’ll be kept for a stud at a breeding farm.  The tourist is recovering well, and is in the running for this year’s Darwin Award.

Croc attack sparks cull call

Politicians in Australia have renewed calls for a croc cull after yesterday’s provoked attack on a Belgian tourist.  An opposition party claims that the croc numbers are now at a sustainable level and can be economically harvested.  There are an estimated 30,000 crocodiles in Queensland … no names have been released.

GATORLAND FIRE COVERAGE

Gatorland eyes Nov. 22 opening

Gatorland President Mark McHugh hopes for a reopening in two weeks after a fire destroyed the park's 7,000-square-foot main building and damaged the giant concrete alligator jaws that for more than 40 years were its entrance. Total reconstruction is expected to take at least a year. Of note, Gatorland records were spared destruction because of an offsite back-up and the efforts of firefighters to protect critical infrastructure. This disaster experience is causing other nearby businesses to reconsider how they protect their critical personnel and fiscal records.

Cause of attraction fire found

ORLANDO SENTINEL (Florida) 08 November 06 Heating pad in snake exhibit sparked Gatorland fire (Beth Kassab)

A reptile heating pad in the snake exhibit caused the fire that destroyed Gatorland's main entrance, gift shop and some offices, the state fire marshal said today.

Monday's fire was ruled accidental, State Fire Marshal Det. Bill Newman said. The conclusion was reached based on evidence in the fire rubble that was traced to the snake exhibit where two pythons died. One dwarf crocodile also was killed the blaze reported at 5:55 a.m. Monday.

Newman said the fire in the Orange County attraction raged out of control so quickly because the building was mostly made of wood and because of the amount of clothing and other fire fuel in the gift shop.

"The debris pile was at least three to five feet high," Newman said of the scene.

A news conference is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Gatorland's owners have vowed to reopen on Nov. 22.
