After a brief wrestling match with the reptile, Martin emerged with gashes on his face requiring 40 stitches, The Australian newspaper reported.

Man sentenced to death

For leaving girl to be eaten alive

By alligators

A murderer who dumped a five-year-old girl in alligator-infested waters where she was eaten alive has been sentenced to death.

Harrel Braddy was free on parole for attempted murder when he befriended Shandelle Maycock and her daughter, Quatisha, through a church.

The killings came after Braddy flew into a rage when Mrs Maycock refused to let him into her home in Florida.

He drove her to a remote sugarcane field, choked her unconscious and left her to die. But she woke up and managed to wave down help from a passing driver.

Meanwhile Braddy drove the girl to a section of the Everglades known as Alligator Alley and dropped her in the water. Her body was found two days later.

Australian Pol to talk crocs in Taiwan

An Australian politician has been given a scholarship to champion two thing close to the Territory's heart _ crocodiles and gas.

Deputy Opposition Leader Terry Mills left for a four-week study trip to Taiwan yesterday. The tour is being paid for by the Taipei Government.

Mr Mills is expected to be criticised by Labor for missing next week's parliamentary sittings in Darwin to visit a country not formally recognised by Australia.

The Blain MLA will represent Territory businesses in trying to establish a market in Taiwan for Territory crocodile meat.

"The Territory crocodile industry is focused on the skins,'' he said.

"The number of crocodiles to be harvested each year is about to be increased and farmers want more value-added benefits.''

Good looks can only get you so far

Australian scientist Sally Isberg is trying to improve the quality of captive crocodiles by studying their DNA to see which animals will grow faster and live longer and produce the best skins.

She said crocs were now chosen for breeding only on their outward appearance.

And how do you take blood from a huge male croc?

"With a syringe and needle," Dr Isberg said. "Very carefully."

Those ain't doggies

A short expose of wrestling classes at the Colorado Gators Alligator Farm & Reptile Park.  400 crocodilians bask in the 87-degree F/ 30 C water provided by a geothermal well after feasting on tilapia from a nearby fish farm.

The farm’s three-hour ‘wrestling’ course costs $100 and takes you through handling 2.5 footers/.75 metre before graduating to one taking on a seven footer/2.1 metres.

This requires standing knee deep in a muddy pond teeming with grown-up alligators — rollicking and thrashing just three feet away.  "Don't worry — they don't see very well in water," assures Mr. Young, stepping over thick serrated tails in a bid to find his patients. "If you see one coming at you, don't move. He'll think you are a tree."

About 150 students, a third of them women, have graduated from the alligator wrestling school in the seven years of its existence.  There have been no serious injuries to students. Light cuts and bruises occur on average once or twice a year, Mr. Young says.

Editorial: A brutal reality check

A Georgia’s paper’s take on the death of an elderly woman who was killed by an alligator on Skidaway Island, that Mother Nature is a harsh mistress.

Coastal Georgia isn't Disney World. The natural environment that gives this corner of the country its beauty and charm is largely nature in the raw. The alligators, snakes and other slithery creatures that share their habitats with man are real, not robots …respecting these ancient denizens of Georgia's coast is smarter.

Man may like to think that he has conquered nature. But the best he can do is to adapt to his surroundings. Call last Friday's attack a brutal reality check.

Alligators: Aggressive by nature?

Director Chris Gentile of  the Oatland Island Wildlife Center discusses alligators: "Alligators recognize different voices, they recognize different smells, they recognize different peoples faces, so even though they don't appear very smart, they're very intelligent."
