Gator water dance

When you're a male gator looking for a mate, you don't need a dance floor to make all the right moves; the warm waters of the Everglades will do just fine, thank you. (Video: © National Geographic.)

Alligator on loose in UK just a soft toy

You really have to go to the URL to see the photograph of the ‘creature with the remains of a bird in its jaws’ … yes, a toy blocked city roads in Bristol, UK and held off a city police team for half an hour!

Tropical storm Fay

Sends wildlife scurrying for cover

Tropical storm Fay has driven alligators, snakes and other critters driven from their swampy lairs into flooded streets, backyards and doorsteps.

Alligators live in all 67 Florida counties, and state officials say they receive more than 18,000 alligator-related complaints each year. But the floodwaters heighten the risk of an encounter with people because the creatures search for a safe place to wait out the storm.

"They are trying to find dry land, someplace to hide," said officer Lenny Salberg of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Reptile deters wrecker driver's recovery effort

In Daytona Beach, Florida a sport utility vehicle plunged into a pond near the golf course at Indigo Lakes.

When the wrecker arrived to recover the sunken vehicle, the driver noticed two alligators nearby.  "They looked pretty big."

Trappers killed an 8-foot/2.4 metre-long gator and the wreckers were able to recover the truck.

Gator aid in Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, Geoff Battrum of Ottawa’s Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo is on tour of the Atlantic provinces educating people about reptiles by giving them hands-on learning experience. They had a crocodile, an alligator and two caimans with them at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition.

The display animals are those either dropped off at the zoo or ‘rescued’ from inappropriate situations.  “We don’t like using the word rescued because people think the animal wasn’t well looked after, where most of the ones we get are very well looked after. Mostly the person just realizes or something clicks that they shouldn’t have it (the crocodilian),” said Battrum.

As far as Battrum is concerned, he has one of the best jobs in the world.

“I get to travel and play with crocodiles,” he laughed.

Lost caiman picked up in Colorado

In Colorado, police dispatch got a very unique call when someone reported seeing a 38-inch/metre-long caiman on the side of the road near the Super 8 motel in Parachute.

Apparently the animal was so docile and unthreatening that authorities determined it was someone’s pet.

The caiman, of a species that is a South American cousin of the aligator, was brought to the CARE facility first and then transferred to the vet tech school at Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus.

Trapped And... Snapped -

Pasir Ris croc caught on fishing line

After five years of ‘stories’, fishermen in Singapore’s Pasir Ris beach caught a 3-foot/metre-long crocodile.

After hauling away the trussed animal , the national water agency PUB and the National Parks Board then conducted a further ‘gator hunt’, albeit an unsuccessful one.

An interview local declared 'After seeing the crocodile, I am not going to swim here anymore. I don't think it's safe and I don't want to risk my life.'

'Pip' the rare croc comes to Jersey

New Jersey’s Cape May County Park & Zoo has a rare Asian Tomistoma - its first ever - on display through October.

American zoos are trying to breed these rare reptiles to save the species, found in freshwater rivers and lakes in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Zookeeper Katie Quigley said the crocodile, named for it's genus (also known as the Malayan Gharial, Tomistoma schlegelii), a female named Pip, eats live goldfish. It is less aggressive than other crocodile species, but that does not make it less dangerous. Keepers are careful around it, she said.

According to the Tomistoma Task Force, no more than a dozen zoos around the United States have these crocodiles. The Tomistoma can grow to more than 16 feet./4.9 meters.
