Gator water dance

When you're a male gator looking for a mate, you don't need a dance floor to make all the right moves; the warm waters of the Everglades will do just fine, thank you. (Video: © National Geographic.)

Large alligator killed after

Straying near La. picnic area

An 11-foot, 2-inch/3.4 metre alligator was pulled from a Bonnet Carre Spillway recreation pond popular with waders and fishers.

"It was near the picnic area and it wasn't afraid of people, so we had it taken out," park ranger Skip Jacobs said.

The alligator was killed because it had no fear of humans, thus increasing the likelihood of an encounter, said Kenny Schmill, St. Charles Parish nuisance animal control officer.

Because many of St. Charles Parish's neighborhoods are built in areas that were once swampland, it's not uncommon to see alligators lazing on local canal banks.

Alligator spotted in

Northern Georgia lake

A 3-4 foot/metre long crocodile has been spotted in Georgia’s Lake Lanier – not usual alligator turf in that they’re not usually found north of Atlanta.

"It could be some happenstance migration that brought this alligator to the lake," Scott Frazier, a Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Biologist said. "It's equally as likely if not more so that somebody had something to do with it."

He said it is possible that a person picked up the gator at another location and released it into Lake Lanier.

Crocodiles on the run in Russia

Russian police in Ural mountain town of Krasnoufimsk caught a crocodile that had escaped from its owner.

Animal protection organizations say crocodiles on the run can be found in summer in nearly all Russian regions.

Exotic reptiles became popular in Russia in the late 1990s, when hundreds of crocodiles were legally imported and smuggled into the country and sold for at least $10,000 per reptile. Crocodiles became the symbols of hundreds of security agencies and restaurants. As the fad lost attraction, their owners became lax in guarding them, which sometimes cost them their lives.

In the last two years, police had to track down 15 crocodiles on the run.

Crocodile In Belait Hut: Anyone Home?

In Brunei’s Kuala Belait area, a crocodile was photographed entering a hut along the Belait River, which in turn resulted in a government warning to the population reminding them about the danger it may pose if the reptiles were to enter their homes.

Skull of largest crocodile in Kendrapara

The skull of an estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), India’s largest, preserved at a miniature museum at Orissa's Kendrapara district continues to attract reptile researchers.

Noted crocodile experts, including Mr Romulus Whitaker, have certified that the preserved skull is the country's largest one. In fact, a bigger crocodile skull was at Bhopal, but now it has been damaged due to unscientific preservation.

Alligator found on La. highway

Remains a mystery

A 5 foot/1.5 metre alligator was removed from the elevated portion of Louisiana’s Interstate 10 in St. Charles Parish where it blocked morning rush hour traffic  The alligator had been struck by a vehicle and authorities initially thought it was dead, but soon found out they were wrong.

"They walked up to it and its mouth opened and it started coming at them - They got back in their cars! It was still feisty."

Wildlife nuisance control officer Kenny Schmill said it might have been a farm raised animal – which would be easy to track because of the tagging system used, or "I think someone put him up there for a joke."

Schmill had to euthanize the alligator because of his injuries.
