Florida says no to homeowners

disposing of 'nuisance' gators

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) decided Wednesday not to open the door to allowing homeowners to dispose of small nuisance alligators on their own, according to an FWC news release.

Instead, the FWC decided to continue the requirement that people contact them, and the agency will dispatch nuisance alligator trappers to remove the reptiles.

Alligator spotted in unusual place-

Metro Atlanta

An alligator was on the loose Tuesday — in the Chattahoochee River in Metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

The reptile, estimated to be about 8 ft/ 2.4 m- long, was sighted near Powers Island, just north of I-285, said Nancy Walther, spokeswoman for the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Scientists and staffers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were trying to determine what to do with the alligator — if they catch it.

"The water is about 72 degrees, so it can survive the summer," Walther said. "But once winter sets in, it can't survive."

"More than likely it was dumped there," Walther said.

 Croc disguise took zoologist

Into deadly crocodiles' lair

When National Geographic herpetologist Dr. Brady Barr decided to dress up as a crocodile, the disguise needed to be good. Otherwise he was in grave danger of being eaten by the real thing.

The zoologist adopted his bizarre outfit in the hope of getting closer to a colony of Nile crocodiles, which can grow up to 20ft.

His disguise was a prosthetic head attached to the front of a protective metal cage covered with canvas and a generous plastering of hippo dung to mask his human scent.

Irwin wants halt in egg harvesting

Terri Irwin says a push to allow Queensland's crocodile farms to harvest eggs from the wild spells disaster for the environment.

The wife of the late conservationist Steve Irwin has come out fighting against a possible change in the management plan for Queensland's saltwater crocodiles, which could allow crocodile farm owners to collect eggs to hatch, raise and later cull in captivity.

"This absolutely cannot be allowed to happen," Mrs. Irwin said.

Do-it-yourself gator disposal?

Think of the tales you could tell and the videos you could make.

Alligator gets in your pool, and you — that's you, yourself, not a licensed alligator trapper — catch it and dispatch it.

This week, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will consider a proposal that would allow homeowners to capture and kill small alligators — less than 4 feet long — on their property.
