Great White of the wetlands -

Albino alligator makes home

At Maritime Aquarium

A 8.5-foot/2.6 metre, albino American Alligator - will appear in a special bayou-themed exhibit, "Great White Alligator," outside the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut through Sept. 1.

A rare genetic anomaly - just 44 are known to exist - the albino alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) does not produce melanin, a compound that produces skin pigmentation. The result is an oddity of nature, an otherwise normal alligator whose creamy white skin and bright pink eyes attract a flurry of curious stares.

Though no stranger to the spotlight, the albino cannot rely directly on the sun for warmth like other cold-blooded reptiles. Its white skin would burn, so the aquarium has set up a shaded enclosure, heated pool and an 85-degree warming stone to keep it comfy.

Sunbathing croc attracts crowd

An Australian crocodile becomes a point of interest in a local pond.

The item is in no way dramatic, but does demonstrate that the Australian locals living close to the critters day-by-day are very aware of the most mundane of activities that crocs get up to.

Crocodile spotted in German river

An animal expert is searching for a 2.5 foot/near-metre long crocodile spotted in a river in central Germany.

Hildesheim city spokesman Horst Richter said two council employees got a five-minute glimpse of the reptile on a backwater of the Innerste river and that the employees' account was credible because one of them was an avid reptile enthusiast.

Crocs ambush laid-back Aussies

Australians are being warned about their attitude to danger after a rise in crocodile attacks was blamed on people becoming blasé about living alongside them.

Mark Read, of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, criticised a man who, after a drinking session, decided he and his dog should cool off in the water. 'You may as well hang a dozen pork chops around your neck if you go swimming at night, with a few beers under the belt, with dogs, in croc country,' he said.

'People are getting cocky and some continue to swim in known crocodile habitat,' he added. 'In 80 per cent of attacks people were swimming or wading in these areas. Forty per cent happen when people act under the influence of alcohol.'

Crocodile, shark clash in battle Down Under

It is being heralded as the clash of the titans - the moment when an 9 foot/3 metre Australian crocodile and a shark went head to head in the wilds of Australia, and the shark came off second best.

An amateur fisherman captured the extraordinary clash between Australia's two most feared predators while on a barramundi fishing trip in the Northern Territory.
