14 April 07 Arm- biting croc wrongly identified
(AFP)
A Taiwanese zoo today admitted that it has mistakenly identified
for eight years a crocodile that bit off a vet's left forearm.
"After an examination by the National Pingtung University of
Science and Technology, it is determined that the animal is a saltwater
crocodile [Crocodylus porosus],'' zoo official Chen Po-tsai said
as the sign "ile crocodile'' was replaced with the correct name. The
300-kilogramme male crocodile survived a police shooting and is now
attracting lots of visitors to its enclosure, zoo officials said.
11-13 April 07 Vet's forearm bitten off By Taiwan zoo crocodile
New development: Zoo officials discovered that the large crocodile, which was shot after it bit off a veterinarian's arm Wednesday, is still alive. Furthermore, visitors to the zoo have been able to breach the enclosure to approach the croc for photographs, thinking that it was dead. Meanwhile, the veterinarian's forearm has been reattached. - I.D. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/latestnews/2007413/45455.htm This piece has been moved to the top for revision. The crocodile in question, described by reports as both an alligator and a Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a 17 year-old Indopacific Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), and very large, at least 4.6m/15 ft in length. The news links immediately below contain photographs of the incident. Be warned, the photographs and video are very graphic.- I. D. One account reports that after consulting with city authorities, the zoo asked police to shoot the animal to death in order to retrieve Chang's limb from the crocodile's mouth. 12 April 07 Six rare Chinese alligators To be released to wild
Six
2 metre/6 foot Chinese Alligators (Alligator sinensis) that were
raised in captivity will be released into the wilds of the Gaojingmiao
Tree Farm in China's Anhui Province and tracked for 18 months.
To
protect Chinese Alligators, which are under state first-grade
protection, from extinction, the Chinese government set up the Chinese
Alligators Breeding Research Center in Xuancheng, Anhui province, in
1979.
According
to a research survey in 2005, less than 150 Chinese alligators were
believed to be living in the wild, in pockets in east China's Jiangxi,
Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
To form a stable number of wild Chinese alligators there should
be at least 500.

12 April 07 More gators could be on prowl
When
the Florida alligator mating season heats up in a few weeks, there is a
possibility that the drought could push more big reptiles into some
Everglades neighborhoods.
Gators start lurking on suburban lawns or snapping in backyard
lakes -- on the hunt for mates, food and, in the case of smaller males,
a wet haven safely away from hormonally juiced, cannibalistic, bigger
gators.
However, Lindsey Hord, nuisance alligator coordinator for the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission declares that ''There
is no wholesale migration to the urban areas,''. Gators, he said,
typically range no more than 1,000 meters.
Frank
Mazzotti, a University of Florida scientist who monitors gator and
crocodile populations in South Florida, said less is known about their
behavior during the extreme droughts possible this year. http://www.miamiherald.com/460/story/70952.html

06 April 07 Big alligator caught near Cape Fear
North
Carolina, USA police were called to handle a 2.7 m/9 ft, 136 kg/300 lb
alligator was crossing Hwy. 701 not far from the Cape Fear River
bridge near Elizabethtown. When police approached, "It got a little bit agitated with a bunch of people watching," an officer said. "It is fun to observe an alligator from a distance," he said. "When an alligator starts to move just give it room. If it is not in the yard and posing a danger to people or pets, then leave it alone."
Alligator
encounters are not that common here, but further east wildlife officers
deal with nuisance gators almost every week during the spring and
summer.

08 April 07 Alligator mating season Means alligator news season
It's courtship and mating season for the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), found in the Southeastern states of the USA. Their movements and behavioral changes, added to the drought conditions being experienced by the state of Florida, will bring them into contact with humans more so than in any other time of year. This means more intrigue- and incident-based news reporting. In order to keep up with the plethora of articles already being posted, The Croc Press will keep these more generalized stories compiled weekly by state under the headline above, for easier reference.
