India's survival hinges on rivers-

Homes of the gharial

An opinion piece from India regarding the protection of India's rivers, home of the critically-endangered Indian Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus):

Today, the gharial itself has become the most endangered large animal in India, 20 times more so than the tiger. Experts say the area once occupied by the gharial has shrunk by over 98%, and the numbers have plummeted by 97% in the past 60 years. While the pressures on gharial habitat have grown manifold, the quality of whatever remains is deteriorating fast.

Drivers beware: Gators are out again

A story from New Orleans, with video: A motorist ran over one gator Wednesday morning along eastbound Interstate 10 between the Twin Span and Irish Bayou, killing it.

"That stretch of the highway runs right through prime habitat for alligators, so we are encroaching on their area and they're coming up on the road to bask on the road -- the hot pavement attracts alligators," Audubon Zoo's Rick Dietz said. "Their metabolism increases when the sun is out and it's getting warmer, so this time of year you're going to see a lot more alligators."
