American crocodile makes comeback
Species status changed to threatened

 

A phone call to Cindy Schulz, spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, confirmed that the Final Rule of the agency downlisting the crocodile to "threatened," takes affect April 19.

In 1976, the crocodile population (Crocodylus acutus) in South Florida — the animal's only habitat in the United States — was 200 to 300 individuals. Today, the population has grown to 1,400 to 2,000 individuals, not counting hatchlings.

New Texas gator season has teeth

 

This story is a follow-up to the recent coverage regarding the new Texas alligator hunting season.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has conducted alligator hunts in the fall in 22 Southeast Texas counties that the department has deemed their core habitat. Those counties will be closed during the spring season, but in any other county in which alligators can be found the season is open.

Alligator won't be removed

From Orlando pond

 

Some Baldwin Park residents in Orlando, Florida, USA were a bit surprised to run across a new neighbor that's lounging in the sun near a popular trail. An alligator has set up camp in a BP retention pond between a path that walkers and joggers use and a trail that's under construction.

The alligator, however, is not legally considered a nuisance, and will remain where he is.

A woman was caught with three crocodiles strapped to her waist at the Gaza-Egypt border crossing after guards noticed that she looked "strangely fat," officials said. The incident, which took place on Thursday, sparked panic at the crossing. - Associated Press
