16 March 08 Senseless killing of croc for sport
Shooters who killed a 4m crocodile in the Territory are themselves now being hunted --by the law.
The body of the hapless croc was found floating 1km from the shore by four sea rangers who were patrolling the area for illegal fishing boats. Crocodiles are a protected species and it is against the law to shoot them.
Thamarrurr Sea Rangers coordinator Rod King was one of those to discover the dead reptile at noon last Thursday.
"One of the local indigenous rangers caught sight of it,'' he told the Sunday Territorian.
The croc had a bullet wound in the side of its head. Dead fish were nearby.
"We left the body there as crocodiles are considered sacred to the indigenous people around here,'' he said. http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2008/03/16/3615_ntnews.html
16 March 08 Man who burned alligator arraigned
A Bethlehem, New Jersey man was arraigned Friday on charges he set a rubber alligator on fire last month, endangering 10 residents of the Fifth Street Hotel.
City police said Samuel Gonzalez, 34, who lives at the building in the 700 block of East Fifth Street, was yelling that God made him burn the alligator. He also allegedly told building manager Joe Chickersky that he would "burn like the alligator."
Police said Chickersky found Gonzalez in the building's kitchen Feb. 8 and wrestled the burning alligator from him. Ten residents had to flee the building, which police said had a "dangerous amount" of smoke. http://www.nj.com/news/expresstimes/pa/index.ssf?/base/news-16/1205553927327440.xml&coll=2
15 March 08 Alligator removed from Cal. apartment
Police found a scaly surprise while conducting a routine probation search in Union City California.
When police conducted a probation search in Union City California, they found a six-foot/two metre-long American Alligator living in the suspects apartment, along with an eight-foot aquarium tank. The tank was filled about a third of the way with water and it had a concrete platform so the alligator could walk to a dry surface.
Police called the fish and game warden, who determined that the suspect did not have a permit for the gator, Galindo said.
The gator is currently being
held at the Oakland Zoo http://www.insidebayarea.com/argus/localnews/ci_8587950
The findings by Townsville researcher Dr Mark Read, from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, show locals mix drinking with water activities, and take risks by swimming at night and with pets. Darwin croc expert Charlie Manolis says Northern Territory statistics back up the research.
Crocodiles more likely to prey on drunks
Crocodiles are four times more likely to attack drunken locals swimming at night than unwary tourists, it has emerged.
Most of the 19 victims of croc attacks – with five fatalities – in Queensland since 1985 were locals (80 per cent) compared with overseas visitors. Queensland crocodile expert Dr Mark Read yesterday the disturbing trends of "humans doing stupid things" around crocodiles.
"You may as well hang a dozen pork chops around your neck if you go swimming at night, with a few beers under the belt, with dogs, in croc country."
"The other outstanding factor was 40 per cent of
people attacked were acting under the influence of alcohol."
