Attacker could be 'freshie'

An Australian has survived being attacked by what's believed to be a freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus johnsoni) at Ivanhoe Crossing.  He had been swimming on the downstream side of Ivanhoe Crossing on January 6 when he was bitten by what is believed to have been a 2m/6 ft- long freshwater crocodile.  The 27-year old required 11 stitches to his arm and four stitches to his neck.

He never bit me once. He behaved. He just chilled out." The gator will be taken to facility with a permit to keep the reptiles.

Our really old animals

The National Museum of the Philippines will soon be the venue of an international conference on the neglected but important component of their endemic biodiversity - the Philippine Crocodile (see Calendar for specific meeting information).

Expected to attend are well known authorities on this species, both Filipinos and foreigners. It is about time that this meeting is held this year, 2007, for no conference of note on animals of ancient lineage has ever been held in the country during the past few years, in contrast to the numerous meetings, conferences and congresses on other aspects of Philippine biodiversity.

Many Filipinos are so prejudiced against crocodiles to the extent that the word "crocodile" has been associated with corruption and corrupt individuals. The print media is full of references to "crocodiles" in Philippine society. This bad reputation of these animals arises from a misunderstanding of these creatures.

Killer croc shot by police

Papua New Guinea authorities report that the 7m/23ft- long crocodile that killed a woman in North Bougainville a fortnight ago was shot dead by police.  It took more than an hour for the police, who used a full M16 rifle magazine, to finally kill the reptile.  It took 30 men to lift the carcass onto a trailer.

Crocodiles thrive at Irwin's zoo

A press report on the late Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo briefly explores just how crocs are kept in the establishment.  The author says of the crocodiles that are featured in the daily ‘jumping and feeding show: “The Australia Zoo crocodiles display the same nasty disposition as if they were in the middle of the wilds — as good an indicator as any that they don't realize they've been caught.”
