A belated greeting to all. Yours Truly got a hard lesson in the perils of web publishing - after a successful launch, and with the anticipation of a November 1st new issue, the computer that is used to create and publish this site and to communicate with contributors and readers, crashed most dramatically. After a few weeks of repair by a professional and a myriad of glitches to find and fix, all is restored. (Fortunately, I had backed up the material on disk.) Since this publication premiered, support from members of the professional croc community and from enthusiasts has been very encouraging, and I thank those who offered it. Comments (including constructive criticism) from visitors to the site are always welcome. The new issue marks several additions: The News section, hosted and commentated by the illustrious Wes von Papineäu, has begun. Some of you may be acquainted with Wes from other herpetological sites. He is a genius at tracking down noteworthy crocodilian-related news and feature stories from around the globe by means of his high-tech canvassing of the Internet, and he updates that page on a daily basis, summarizing each piece to help the reader determine it’s value. His commitment and professionalism are impressive, and his efforts are surely among the most important to this journal. Feel free to email him if you have questions or care to offer suggestions or leads on stories, or just to give him a thumbs-up. Welcome to the site, Wes! The new year seems to be the time of the Tomistoma (Malayan Gharial, Tomistoma schlegelii)). This critically endangered animal is getting lots of attention in the croc community, due to the efforts of Crocodile Specialist Group’s Tomistoma Task Force (TTF), highlighted by a fundraising event next month. You’ll no doubt notice the TTF’s presence throughout this site, in display ad promotions for this non-profit group. Coinciding with the noteworthy event, the Features section will very soon offer a profile on croc specialist and TTF Chairman Ralf Sommerlad, the first of a permanent series. Ralf’s cooperation and modesty in letting us kick off the series with his life story is very much appreciated. The Crocodopolis Shop is open! This retail portal gives users of the site the opportunity to buy gifts, books, video, housewares, toys, and many other items, while simultaneously supporting this journal. A small percentage of sales revenues generated on Amazon.com through this shop (that is, purchases made by a visitor to this site within 24 hours of entering the Amazon portal) will go into the coffer to cover the expenses incurred by the publication of Crocodopolis, and to pay for improvements – and you aren’t charged extra on Amazon for this to happen. (In order to clarify the nature of this website’s financial status, I’ve included a link to the Financial Disclosure, located at the bottom of page one.) A few images have been uploaded to the Gallery. This section will eventually contain many photos, artworks and other graphics. We’ve put out the Guestbook, so if you’d like to sign in and say hello, please do! The International Directory, Websources, Filmography and Calendar have all been updated or expanded, and continue to be regularly. One of the most important goals of the publisher and contributors of this site is to maintain an openness and responsiveness to readers, and to work toward to goal of widespread interaction - meaning that through technical improvements we will offer readers the capability to publish responses to many of the items in the journal, such as news stories, features, images, blogs, et al. Readers of the site who have talents or abilities in certain areas of programming or design and wish offer their services or ideas, are most welcome to contact me. Keep watching for new content features currently in the works… Thank you, everyone.
End of blog.
