Carpe annum

In one year I've only written four blogs. Geez.

A year ago I expected I'd be churning these out at least on a weekly basis, but it was not to be. I mentioned at the outset of publishing  that I would let this publication evolve, and that has meant expectations unfulfilled, and, better yet, better-than-imagined expectations fulfilled. The eastern philosophers always prove me wrong - don't set your sights too closely on specifics, don't attach to the outcome.

My busy life has not afforded me the time to contemplate blog subjects and sit and type them, but nevertheless, enhancements have been made, resources added (some streamlined) and some applications cut.

Although I'm an artist, I had no training as a web designer before launching this site, so I've had to learn along the way how to manipulate software and hardware to realize a vision. I'm not where I want to be yet, but the journey has been frustrating, fun, ecstatic and sobering.

The best part of doing this is the people I get to connect with to share my passion for all things Crocodylia, which is the core reason I started this madness in the first place.

I'm grateful to the illustrious Wes Von Papineäu for managing one of Crocodopolis' most important features: the news. Wes is a news hound deluxe (and not just on crocs - he hunts news for other herp interests, too)

Who'd have thought there was so much croc news in the world? Know how many such stories there've been since November 2006? Read Wes's commentary and find out. The cultural impact of crocodilians in the world is considerable, and why this site tries to address it regularly.

I thoroughly enjoyed writing a biographette on Ralf Sommerlad, and wanted to do several of these through the year. I hope we can present more, since there are so many fascinating individuals working with crocs around the world, people of character and drive who I would be fortunate - any writer, fortunate - to present.

Please take a look at the new cover image, by Florida's 'photographer laureate,' and read about him and his work here.

I was privileged to work with the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and fellow croc folk in raising funds for conservation and look forward to a more targeted, organized effort in the next year. I'll keep you informed.

There will be some pleasant and some exciting additions and enhancements to Crocodopolis to come - in the design, applications, features and more; I'll let them be surprises, dear reader.

I always love to hear from readers, whether they offer criticism or praise, or just a greeting.

Thanks for hanging around here for the last year or so. I hope your experiences here get better with age.

End of blog.
